Troy Smith :: Course Designer and Primary Faculty
Troy Smith, JD is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama and the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. In 1994 he received the Faculty Award for Meritorious Achievement and Distinguished Service for his efforts to promote the use and teaching of mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
Troy began mediating in 1992. Since then, he has worked exclusively in the field of mediation as a mediator, trainer, author and editor.
He has taught mediation in training programs and other venues to thousands of individuals nationwide including lawyers, judges, students, government employees, business executives, health care professionals, educators and others. In 1995, he created The Mediation Process and the Skills of Conflict Resolution, a basic mediation training curriculum currently offered exclusively through Mediation Media, Inc. The program focuses on the real-world application of the mediation process and has been taught nationwide continuously for over 15 years. Additionally, Troy has developed advanced mediation training seminars based on the successful training model of The Mediation Process and the Skills of Conflict Resolution curriculum. The programs are now offered approximately 100 days each year nationwide.
Troy is the former program manager of a mediation service based in Salt Lake City, Utah and sponsored by the Utah State Bar. In addition to mediating on a daily basis, he was responsible for a staff of approximately 20 additional mediators who worked for the program. During this time, he also helped establish a law school mediation clinic providing law students with real-world mediation opportunities through the local court system. In 1994, Troy became the founding editor of Mediation Monthly: The Newsletter for ADR Professionals -- the first newsletter of its kind -- dedicated to the professional mediator. Troy is a member of the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution, the Association for Conflict Resolution, the Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA), the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) and other professional organizations.
Some of his most challenging and rewarding work in the area of dispute resolution comes from co-mediating (with his wife) the trials and tribulations of their four growing daughters ~ ranging in age from a toddler to a college student ~ who provide on-going opportunities to observe and practice negotiation strategy, peace-keeping skills and all manner of dispute resolution techniques! Troy and his family live in Houston, Texas.
